Anxiety

Generalized anxiety disorder is defined as excessive anxiety and worries about several events or activities most of the time for at least 6 months. Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric syndromes in the U.S. population. Nearly one-fifth of adults report a lifetime history of one of the major anxiety disorders, and 1 in 10 suffer from a current anxiety disorder. The most common symptoms are headache, perspiration, palpitations, tightness in the chest, and mild stomach discomfort.

Panic disorder is characterized by the occurrence of panic attacks. Some of the symptoms an individual may experience with panic attacks are sudden, unexpected, and brief onsets of terror, sweating, trembling, chest pain, shortness of breath, desensitization, or a fear of death.

Living in a chronic state of high anxiety can take a long-term toll on an individual's health and quality of life, and in these cases, intervention is warranted. Understanding these changes is key to facilitating clinical detection and treatment, particularly among older adults, who are the largest and fastest-growing age demographic in the United States.
